Celebrating 75 Years of Aviation

Dec 18, 2023 | Aviation, Community, History

The Department of Aviation marked a significant milestone, celebrating the 75th anniversary of Clark County’s acquisition of what we now know as Harry Reid International Airport on December 19.

Clark County leaders celebrated by presenting the airport with a proclamation at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on the anniversary, and airport staff distributed cookies.

The airport also partnered with Clark County Parks and Recreation for ongoing celebrations, including a series of exhibits and events titled Desert Skyways: 75 Years of Clark County Aviation.

The centerpiece is the main exhibit at the county museum which features artifacts and photos from the golden age of aviation. Model airplanes represent the many airlines that have flown through Southern Nevada, and uniforms show how flight crews have changed over time. The exhibit at the museum, located at 1830 South Boulder Highway, runs through January 29, 2024.

At the aviation museum above Terminal 1 Baggage Claim at LAS, a temporary pictorial exhibit on display through January 22 illustrates the past 75 years of commercial aviation in Clark County.

To conclude the commemoration, a panel of aviation experts will discuss Southern Nevada’s last 75 years of terminals, takeoffs and going full throttle at the County Museum on January 11 at 6 p.m.
