Big news for the future of aviation in Southern Nevada

May 27, 2025 | Airport Improvement, Aviation

May 19 marked an important day for the future of aviation in Southern Nevada. The Federal Aviation Administration announced its notice of intent to prepare an environmental impact statement for the Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport (SNSA), a proposed second commercial airport serving our region.

Clark County Director of Aviation Rosemary Vassiliadis released the following statement in response to the landmark development:

Today’s announcement by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issuing the Notice of Intent to prepare the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport (SNSA) marks a major milestone in our region’s aviation future.

This important step brings us closer to addressing the increasing demand for air travel in one of the nation’s fastest growing regions. As a second commercial airport, SNSA will add much-needed capacity, improve service reliability, and ensure Southern Nevada continues to thrive as a global destination for business and tourism. We know the crucial role we play in the region, and SNSA represents the future of economic vitality for all the communities we service.

More than 25 years in the making, we thank our federal delegation, the FAA, BLM, Clark County Board of County Commissioners and countless partners who have supported this project. This is a pivotal step for our region, and upon receiving a favorable Record of Decision, we are committed to building an airport that supports the long-term growth of our region.

SNSA aims to alleviate congestion, enhance connectivity and support the increasing demands of both locals and tourists. Land set aside for development of the airport is located roughly 30 miles south of Harry Reid International Airport in the Ivanpah Valley, pictured above.

The FAA and BLM will hold three public meetings — two in-person and one virtual — on July 29, 30 and 31. The meetings will allow the public to speak with representatives of both agencies. For more information and to register for upcoming meetings, click here.
