A new monument sign flanking a main entry point at Harry Reid International Airport was lit up this week to commemorate the name change from McCarran International Airport. A ceremony was attended by Clark County officials, airport executives, community members and the Reid family.
The airport’s name was officially changed in 2021. Since then, airport officials have worked to update the brand from curb to gate, using funds from private donations as stipulated by county commissioners when they voted unanimously on the name change.
The monument design reflects the airport’s mid-century aesthetic as well as the vibrant energy of Las Vegas. It serves as a dedication to Senator Reid and his contributions to aviation in Nevada as well as a tribute to the airport’s pivotal role as the gateway to the sports and entertainment capital of the world.
Reid represented Nevada in Congress from 1983 through 2017, serving both in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. As Senate Majority Leader from 2007 to 2015, Reid sponsored legislation that profoundly impacted aviation in Southern Nevada, including actions that enabled the completion of Terminal 3 in 2012 and the construction of a new air traffic control tower at LAS that opened in 2016. He also was instrumental in securing land for the future site of the Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport.
The monument sign is located at the corner of Tropicana Ave. and Paradise Road. A second sign can be seen at Tropicana and Koval.
