Nevada’s second-busiest airport soared to new heights in 2024.
North Las Vegas Airport (VGT), one of five airports owned and operated by the Clark County Department of Aviation, recorded 228,424 operations last year. The number was an 18.5% increase over the previous year. The last time VGT exceeded 200,000 operations was in 2007.
The 2024 number can be attributed to takeoffs and landings conducted by eight flight schools based at the airport, as well as an increase in general aviation traffic in Southern Nevada due to high profile special events in the region.
VGT opened as Sky Haven Airport on December 7, 1941. Clark County purchased the airport in 1987. Its primary mission is to attract small, general aviation aircraft away from Harry Reid International to reduce congestion and increase airspace capacity for commercial airliners.
“We also support a host of public services,” said VGT Manager Karina Tarnowska. “For example, Metro launches air patrols from VGT to help safeguard the community, and air ambulance flights transport critically ill patients to treatment centers throughout the region.”
The airport is also home to aircraft maintenance facilities, a restaurant and sightseeing tour companies.
As a premier general aviation destination, the airport is dedicated to enhancing facilities and services to accommodate the needs of its customers. The terminal underwent an extensive remodel in 2019.
Clark County recently contracted with a national airport planning firm to prepare an update to VGT’s master plan. This document provides guidelines for the airport’s overall maintenance, development, and operation to ensure its continued viability.
